Book-entry account or custody account?
A book-entry account is required to invest in stocks and other exchange-traded investment products. When you open Trade Online, a book-entry account is automatically created for you.
What is a book-entry account?
A book-entry account, also known as a custody account or stock portfolio, is an account intended for the storage of electronic securities. Book-entry accounts store electronic securities such as stocks and exchange-traded funds, i.e., ETFs. When an investor buys, for example, stocks, they do not receive a physical share certificate. Instead, ownership is registered directly on the book-entry account. A book-entry account is thus an electronic securities storage account.
